Kalyan Chaubey pips Bhaichung Bhutia to AIFF presidency

In pursuance of the recently-passed Supreme Court order, the AIFF saw its presidential election scheduled for September 2, 2022. Bhaichung Bhutia, former Indian men’s national team captain and footballing legend, lost out to former Indian footballer Kalyan Chaubey by a margin of thirty-three votes to one.

The election comes as one of the first steps in aiding the AIFF in regaining control over its affairs. The CoA recently ceased to exist after the Supreme Court ordered for the same in light of FIFA’s decision to interpret the intrusion of the CoA as third-party interference. FIFA had subsequently suspended the AIFF but later lifted the suspension after the CoA was disbanded.

The completion of the presidential election of the AIFF is pertinent as the President will now handle the affairs of the federation.
