About

Hailing from a family of sportspersons, Hurkacz was surrounded by sports from a very young age. His mother was a junior tennis champion back in Poland, his uncles were tennis players as well, and his grandfather was an international volleyball player. Hurkacz has stated that the influence of his family pushed him towards his current career. Having started playing tennis at the age of five when he accompanied his mother to her practices, he slowly got enrolled in the academies for proper training.

Although Hurkacz turned professional in 2015, he would have to wait another three years for this first victory at a Grand Slam event. His first-round victory at the 2018 French Open saw the young Pole register his first Grand Slam and major ATP event victory. The following year, Hurkacz won the Canberra Challenger to start off the season. He consistently caused upsets throughout the season when he defeated Kei Nishikori and Denis Shapovalov at the 2019 BNP Paribas Open and later went on to defeat Matteo Berrettini and Dominic Thiem at the Miami Open the same year.

Hubert went on to reach his first ever Grand Salm third round at the 2019 Wimbledon where he saw his campaign end at the hands of Novak Djokovic. He further went on to showcase his talent when he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas at the 2019 Rogers Cup. Hurkacz took home his maiden ATP title at the 2019 Winston-Salem Open, capping off a relatively successful year.

Hurkacz continued his good form into 2020 as he started the year off with a strong performance at the ATP Cup, defeating the likes of Thiem, Diego Schwartzman and Borna ?ori?. He also reached the semi-final of the 2020 ATP Auckland Open. Heading into the 2020 French Open, Hubert broke into the top 30 rankings for the first time, going into Roland Garros seeded No. 29.

Hurkacz began 2021 strongly with a win at the Delray Beach Open, winning his second ATP title. He followed it up with a quarter-final appearance at the Great Ocean Road Open in Australia. Hubert, who was known to cause major upsets by now, knocked out Adrian Mannarino in straight sets at the first round of the Rotterdam Open and went on to defeat Richard Gasquet at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

The 24-year-old took home his third career title at the Miami Open and made himself a force to be reckoned with as he beat the likes of Shapovalov, Milos Raonic, Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev and Jaanik Sinner to take his first Masters 1000 and his third ATP trophy. His victory in Miami also saw him break into the top 20 rankings with a rank of No. 16.

Style of Play

An all-court defensive baseliner, Hurkacz is known to be a versatile player with impressive attacking, accelerating and defending abilities.

At 6’5”, Hurkacz is a big hitter and has powerful forehand and backhands. The Polish youngster is also a big low and flat ball player while possessing a unique ability to play a ‘dive shot’ that sees him hit shots whilst he is falling down diving. Unlike his peers, Hurkacz has also confessed to shutting his eyes when he hits the ball.

Sponsorships

Grupa LOTOS – Poland’s leading oil and gas company has been known for sponsoring young Polish talents. The Gda?sk-headquartered company signed up as Hubert Hurkacz’s main partner in August 2019. Their current deal sees the agreement run through till the 2022 season. As part of the deal, the LOTOS logo is worn by Hurkacz on the sleeve of his outfits at Grand Slam tournaments and on his chest for the other ATP tournaments. LOTOS also gains advertising rights along with image-building for promotional activities and already has Hurkacz as the ambassador for the LOTOS Rackets National Tennis Promotion Programme across Poland.

Yonex – The Japanese sports equipment manufacturing company currently sponsors Hurkacz’s entire kit – from his bag to shoes including his rackets. Harkacz is known to use the VCORE PRO 97 racket that is also used by the likes of Stan Wawrinka, Hyeong Chung and Frances Tiafoe. The Pole signed up with the Tokyo-headquartered company in January 2019.
